July 2015 Sgraffito Challenge - Week 3 - Human Figures

Ok, this challenge freaked me out so much that I procrastinated for two weeks!  Once again, all I had to do was start and it rolled along just fine.  First, I searched for images.  I kind of wanted to do multiple people, originally thinking a women and a child. The more I looked, the less I was able to find "suitable" images.  So, I settled on this one - a couple on the beach. 

Then, I literally started out with stick figures:

 

I continued the procrastination by working on it in about 3 or so sessions. (Still freaked out!)

Note: I did not add any shading as I have no intention of firing this.  Their joined hands need a bit more work, too.  As sgraffitos go, I think it's good enough to fire (though his neck's a bit long!), but I don't think it's saleable.  Such a picture would only be meaningful to the people it represents.  Even still, it's nice to know I could do this from a photo.

July 2015 Sgraffito Challenge - Week 2 - Light Bulb

 

Create this light bulb.  Made of glass and metal, lots of reflections, small parts all made this another difficult challenge.  Kelly Crosser Alge is not letting us off easy!  I think I used a bit too much powder this time, but it looks ok in this photo.  Haven't dumped this one yet...maybe I should fire?

July 2015 Sgraffito Challenge - Week 1 - Crow

Create a crow.  Black objects are as difficult to do as white objects are!

Mr. Crow as he appears on the light table, just before he flew back into the jar!  A bit of a fat chest, or maybe not quite long enough, but I think his eye looks good as well as the fuzzy feathers underneath.  I hadn't done any detailed powder drawings lately, so I'm happy enough with him!

 

Day 31: The End! Recap of creations

Well, the 30 in 30 Sgraffito Challenge is over!  It was challenging, rewarding, frustrating, interesting, maddening, and joyous all at once.  Many, many thanks to Kelly Crosser Alge for investing so much of her time into us.  She did a fantastic job of giving assignments that were spot on to bring us out of our comfort zones, but gave plenty of encouragement to make us believe that we could complete them and we did.  I'm so glad I participated.  Not only did I learn that if I stick to this, I could get "good", but I met so many talented glass artists and just plain nice people along the way.  Best January ever!  Here's my composite Sgraffito month.
